Hayley recently graduated with her MS in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from the Gilling’s School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Working closely with staff of the Water Institute at UNC and their partners, she joined the Baseline Assessment of WASH in Healthcare Facilities in Malawi project. Her thesis focused on researching the role of cleaners and cleaning staff in establishing and maintaining environmental health conditions in 44 healthcare facilities in Malawi. While in Malawi she also piloted a WASH costing tool in order to evaluate the costs and components associated with introducing, elevating, and constructing WASH services at healthcare facilities.

During her time at UNC, she worked with The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as a WASH, hydrogeology, and climate case studies intern where she collaborated with field offices and in-country stakeholders to determine the feasibility of potential WASH interventions as well as developed support programs to ensure effective program management. With UNICEF she researched climate change resilient WASH implementation technologies and drafted a field study report evaluating the use of solar powered water systems in Mauritania, Africa at the community, district, and country level.

Since graduating, Hayley works as a WASH Research Assistant at Global Water 2020, a three-year advocacy and facilitation initiative designed to accelerate progress towards water access and security for all people in developing countries with a particular focus on WASH in healthcare facilities. Hayley is particularly interested in implementation science, water system sustainability, climate change resilient WASH technologies, and elevating the role of cleaners in healthcare facilities.
